Cinemasports, San Jose, CA, August 2005

Posted on Friday 2 September 2005

So, I finally directed something! :)

We did Cinemasports at San Jose last Saturday. This is the second time we do it, the first time was in April 2005 at Santa Cruz (I’ll probably upload that video later). For those who don’t know what Cinemasports is, this is a 10h marathon for short movie: at 9am you receive some “ingredients”, and you have 10h to write, shoot and edit the short movie and give back a tape at 7h30pm. It is a lot of fun for most of the crew, except maybe for the editor ;)

As usual the team was great and did a very good job. To go and scout for the location we had to hike for about 30min-1h in the hill, and of course this day was very hot (it would have been too easy with an overcast sky…). We didn’t have a portable printer so we had to work without printed script, Yara got bitten by insects (she is still recovering), we didn’t eat, and did I already say it was damn hot? But well… that’s why cinemasports is fun! :)

I enjoyed directing my first short, even though I can’t wait to direct a “real” short movie, with preparation, reharsal…

We really have a great team of close friends and it is always a pleasure to work together.

Oh, by the way, we are not called “all-in production” anymore, someone already took it so we had to change. That sucks because we all love this name, it has a very special meaning for us. When we get rich we’ll buy them ;) But anyway, we are called “Follow Focus” now.

So here is the cinemasports video in full resolution (27Mb using the H264 codec, you’ll need Apple Quicktime 7 or MPlayer).

This one had 3 ingredients:

  • Someone has to eat something yellow
  • misidentify
  • A howl in the distance

The cast, A Follow Focus Production:

  • Directed by me ;)
  • Written by Gavin Long and VJ Rajan
  • Director of Photography: Ryan Cole
  • Edited by VJ Rajan
  • Starring Oscar Arguello, Gavin Long and Yara Demny
  • Sound technician: Andrew Kostyanovsky
  • Production assistant: Alvin Chung

I’ll probably post a re-edited version later, this one is the version we gave that night.

Yeah, that was a lot of fun, wasn’t it? Sweltering in the heat, half-hour-long hikes to get to the location, no food, no water, and then eventually, one heck of a rushed editing job. But still, we kicked ass. So aarrrooo. Aiyo. Whatever. Whichever’s our new slogan now.

Oh, if it makes Yara feel any better, I got bitten by insects pretty badly the next week doing something totally unrelated. So.

    Good times.
