Airport Express setup solution to join existing network

Posted on Sunday 27 May 2007

Like this guys, I had my 2 hours of fun while trying to make my airport express works with the Orange’s livebox (I have the inventel version).

I never had any problems with it before (it was paired with an airport extreme base station), but since I recently moved back to France, I had to configure the airport express to join the Livebox. Oh boy… what a pain. I tried all the tricks I found around, to no avail. Long story short, here is the final solution, which is quite clean. No Static IP like the guy above, no strange $ prefix…

It just seems that the airport express doesn’t like a base with wep+wpa enabled at the same time. Hence this solution for the Livebox:

  • Go to http://192.168.1.1 in your favorite browser (to access the Livebox’s admin interface)
  • Enter “admin” (without the quote of course) for the login and the password if you haven’t changed the default setting
  • Go to “configuration”->”AvancĂ©e”->”Sans fil”
  • By default, both WEP and WPA are enabled at the same time, just switch it to WPA only, WEP sucks anyway
  • Apply the livebox’s setting
  • Configure the airport express using the airport admin utility (just set it to join an existing network and provide the WPA key without any prefixes or spaces. No need to provide a static IP either. Just enter the WPA Key)

And Voila, you can enjoy your speakers while browsing the web ;)

    I’m not sure I understand your problem. You want: livebox < -> airport < -> you?
    What did you buy the airport station for?

    Anyway, normally using “Airport Admin Utility” (/Applications/Utilities/) you can connect to your airport and select the option to join an existing network.

    Regards,

    Came across this posting - had problems with changing ISP to Orange from Demon - no printer, no music through AX - your solution saved the day. Many Thanks ChoJin.
