R.I.P. TuO

Posted on Sunday 25 February 2007

Jean-Michel Hervé, as known as TuO died at the age of 28 from a brain cancer.

TuO was an old friend back from the good old days, from the demomaking days. He was one of the main coder/programmer of the demomaking group called SkyTech, in which I was member too - along with some other close friends -, and was well known and appreciated in the community.

I first met him virtually on the BBS A.C.E owned by Gandalf, before the Internet era. I then joined SkyTech and for many years we had the best years of my life, with him, Shodan, Madman and ZeKiller (and later HouHouTiGrouTiGrou/Faxe, Demnia, Roudoudou, Skal, Phar, Made, Lea… I just can’t name them all). We attended coding parties, the famous Pizzahut A.C.E parties and we met a lot of new people across Europe. We moved from the BBS era to the Internet era, we later became moderator on #demofr and we continued to have so much fun together. I’ll particularly remember the secretly improvised party in Madman’s garage (once Madman’s parents left home for the weekend), the LTPs, the ArfParty and the Wired ‘98 with him.

He contributed to the community many things, demos of course, tools, tutorials and open source libraries. He worked in multiple game companies, for example on the Lankhor’s 3D engine for “F1 World Grand Prix” and as a lead developer on “Alone in the Dark” at Eden Games.

We went on with our jobs but I still remember him and these days as yesterday. I still think of him as a close friend and I will miss him tremendously. He was one of the best friend you could have and he left us way too early.

Rest In Peace TuO.

It’s been so long… I’m lacking words. If there’s a heaven up there, I’m sure that’s were Tuo is. He’s one of the nicest people…
    A bientôt, Jean-Michel

I met Tuo a time he came for a trip in Bordeaux, after years of virtual discussion on IRC #. And we had a great time disputing various subjects on demomaking, coding and life in general.
I did not know him a lot, still I remember him deeply as if it was yesterday.
But I know for sure everyone will keep Tuo in mind as a great personality, full of life, generous and higly appreciated. Wherever you are TuO keep on astonishing us with your creations !

    TuO ? L’Ours blanc ! Je m’en rappel encore comme si c t hier.
    Que de bons souvenirs, du bons temps qui resteront intactes et perpetuel comme un while(true){};
Avec toutes ces lignes de codes mis bout à bout on pourrait faire un pont entre la terre et la lune.
Et dans ce rêve sans fin, nous nous retrouvons un jour, A bientôt …

    I don’t know what to say…

I feel a deep sadness today, even though JM and I had drifted apart those last years.
I remember our crazy geeky times in high school; I remember JM taught me my first guitar chords; hey, as a matter of fact I still have the electric guitar he sold me back then…

JM was someone good, that’s for sure.
    Someone generous.
    Someone who cared.
I’m proud that I’ve been his friend and creative partner.

Wherever you are buddy, I hope you’re in peace.

    Sad sad times.
He was a great person. One of the kindest man I ever met, and incredibly talented. I had good times playing with his SkySound lib, back in the old good days.
I’ll remember the demoparties we met at, and the long irc chats we had this latest year.
It’s a great loss. We’ll miss you so much. I do.
I hope you’re in peace now.
    Good bye my friend.

Tuo was one of the nicest person I’ve met, he’s always been a great inspiration.
He was really talented and modest. He will stay in my memory.

I think life is sometimes really unfair.

    Rest In Peace Jean-Michel.

Oh merde… JM était une personne très talentueuse et remplie de passion. Il était définitivement promis à un bel avenir.

Don’t know what to say.. excepted that all my positive thoughts go to his family & close friends. That’s definitively a sad day today

I only met you twice in real life but I’ll always remember you the way you were online: wise, bon viveur and considerate towards everyone. You taught me a lot, not about programming but about life, especially how to behave myself when I was acting like a stupid twit. Thank you for all you’ve done. May you rest in peace.
